About College Merthyr Tydfil

For the first time, there is much greater choice of post-16 qualifications available locally to learners within Merthyr Tydfil. As well as a comprehensive range of vocational, apprenticeship, part-time and higher education programmes, the College offers over 30 AS levels. That makes us the largest provider of AS learning in South East Wales. We are also the only college in South Wales to be an Associate College of the Royal Society, recognition of our excellence in the teaching of science and mathematics that provides our students with a
unique opportunity to participate in scientific meetings, exhibitions, and educational research.

Our apprenticeship programmes provide the opportunity for students to gain practical skills in specific occupational areas. The progression and employability of our students at the heart of everything we do.

The College has a unique status as part of the University of South Wales. This relationship with Wales's largest University, has been a key driver in enhancing the progression pathways
students have to higher education. At the same time it opens up the chance for both staff and students to draw on a larger bank of skills, resources, and opportunities for development.

GEC Background

The GEC Cymru (Wales) competition has been running in Wales since 2004 and The College Merthyr Tydfil has taken part every year since its inception.  Although our team won the Peer Voted award one year we have never been successful before in winning the competition.

This year the team from The College Merthyr Tydfil competed against 18 other teams from all the colleges in Wales to win the GEC Cymru (Wales) 2014 Award.
